Why is it summer kind of wraps up on Labor Day? The barbecue grills, the viewing of the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, the last trip to the lake, or the swimming pool all happen on Labor Day. Why is it we don't WORK on Labor Day? Isn't labor another noun to describe work?
Working at Kennesaw State I have gotten to know some great people. Skip Spann is a fellow from Louisiana who was general manager of Town Center Mall for many years and didn't like retirement so he came back to work for our university as a director of university development. I like Skip a lot because we both grew up in towns that was about neighbors and the Golden Rule was just practiced and understood by most folks. Mr. Spann found something in his email that he forwarded to me that I thought you dear readers of the Tallapoosa Journal might enjoy. It is kind of like as if my grandmother had written these things.
Words that soak into your ears are whispered...not yelled. Meanness doesn't just happen overnight. Remember to forgive your enemies. It messes up their heads. Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you. It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge. You cannot unsay a cruel word. Every path has a few puddles. When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty. The best sermons are lived, not preached. Most of the stuff people worry about ain't never gonna happen, anyway. Don't judge folks by their relatives. If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging. The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every morning. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment. Letting the cat out of the bag is a lot easier than putting it back in. If you get to thinking you're a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else's dog around.
Finally friends, live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly and leave the rest to God.
I have to run now and put up the beach balls and floaties. Where did this summer go? It was one of my favorite in memory because I spent most of it in my hometown.
