Article for February 11, 2008 Tallapoosa Journal

Alright gentlemen we need to address something that might help make your life
easier.
Thursday the 14th is Valentine's Day. St. Valentine's Day is recognized as a day
of romance. Many remember the day as when the Bugs Moran gang were lined up at a
garage wall in Chicago and were machine gunned down. I find that if you don't
adequately remember the day for your lady, you might wish you could meet the
same fate at the gangsters from the Windy City back in '29.
You must remember boys that this day can be a day to score points with your lady
and also can either get you out of the dog house or put you in it so far you
will have to wear a flea collar. I have known guys that still chase cars. I will
offer some tips that can make the day a wonderful one that she will never
forget.
First of all flowers work. I never met a woman who didn't love to get flowers.
It really doesn't matter what kind of flowers. Red roses are the traditional
flowers delivered on Valentine's Day but any flowers will make her happy. I
recommend you put Allen's Florist on your speed dial.
Valentine cards my next recommendation to you. Fellows the more elaborate the
card the better she is going to like it. Try to go with the "to my loving wife"
cards with a beautiful love poem in it instead of those with a cartoon of Maxine
or Stewie from Fox Television's "Family Guy". If you spring for more than one
card the better life is going to be for you.
If you really want to make the day special, dinner out somewhere is suggested.
Crossroads Restaurant is a good place to dine. The new pizza place that now
occupies the old Mitnick Chevrolet dealership would be good to give the day a
certain international flair. A milkshake from Burger Chick or a biscuit from
Jack's is something that she even might find romantic. If you think a candle
light dinner at home is something she might enjoy for Valentine's Day, I think
that you should tell her that you will prepare the meal and then go to the deli
at Holcombe's Foodland and get some of their fried chicken and mashed potatoes.
Guys face it, we are only good at fixing breakfasts. It is hard to mess up an
egg. I must admit that when Scott McClain gets word that I am making toast he
has the fire department put on high alert.
When is the last time you took her to a movie? The kind of movie that you hold
hands and doesn't have Clint Eastwood or Bruce Willis in the cast. Take her to a
movie that doesn't have explosions or special effects of space aliens. Forgive
me for this sexist remark. A chick flick is something she would really like and
will earn you more romance credits. A movie that stars Penelope Cruz, Halle
Berry or Reese Witherspoon usually skews toward females. Face it pal, woman rule
the film world always have, always will. Buddy shelve plans for the new Rambo
movie for now. Personally I have not seen a movie in over five years that didn't
star a computer animated character. Kids change the dynamics of choice of film
fare. My little girls Presley and Callie are still upset that Lightning McQueen
and Tow-Mater from "Cars" were not given Golden Globes or Academy Awards.
Here is one more suggestion to make Valentine's Day a memorable one for the two
of you. How about taking her to the very place that you proposed to her? That
might be just the ticket unless you asked her to marry you at Essie Mae's or
Club 78. Understand, I am not an expert on romance. The experiences of giving
away property to women from Montgomery and Marietta prove that.
