Waking up last Monday morning with the wind howling outside my window isn't
the way I like to start the day. I'd prefer a fresh brewed cup of Folgers and a
hot cheese biscuit. The wind blew down limbs in the yard and drive way and even
leaned a pine on my next door neighbor's kitchen door. The Glaze Family I am
proud to report are all fine, except 2 year old Braden also known as "Bobo" lost
his bankie. Congratulations to the City of Tallapoosa for the excellent Dogwood
Festival. Seeing so many people on Head Avenue was wonderful. I saw Billy Wayne
Kilgore who as a kid listened to WVOK out of Birmingham and Joe Rumore. Joe
Rumore was a big influence on me going into radio. I never met him but do know
Diane Brennan Knapp whose father Cyril Brennan was the guy who signed the checks
there. Cyril Brennan also was a very respected broadcast engineer who hand
designed the control panels of the 50, 000 watt blowtorches he owned in
Birmingham, Montgomery, Jacksonville, and Chattanooga. By the way, did you know
that WKNG is now 50,000 watts now? I am able to pick them up in Marietta as
clear as a bell. I understand there is a family in Steadman
who can pick the station up on their toaster. Tallapoosa is still the place I
consider home because the folks I know
there always supports the home team . I am asking you all to support the home
team by shopping at home. You can support the home team by supporting the local
radio station that has a growing fan from Tallapoosa to the east side of
Birmingham and the western metro of Atlanta. The "Trade Line" show gets calls
from all over northwest Georgia and northeastern Alabama. You can support the
home team by supporting this newspaper. I remember the lady who gave me the
inspiration to write for this paper when I was in the 9th grade. Frances Greene
had ink flowing through her veins. She loved the newspaper business and along
with her husband Ralph and their 3 sons put this paper out every week. I
remember seeing them in the late hours of a Wednesday night printing the paper
to have it on the street by Thursday morning. Frances Greene was dedicated to
the people of our town and I got my minor in journalism from West Georgia
because of her. You could see her at Tallapoosa High School and West Haralson
High School sports functions with a camera and a note pad on Friday nights. She
never missed a city council meeting and she always had time to stop and talk to
readers on the street. I followed Frances Greene's lead as a broadcaster in that
I was never too busy to stop and talk to a listener. Frances Greene and her
husband Ralph truly had a passion for our town's people and the paper they
dedicated their lives to. You can
honor them by supporting the Tallapoosa Journal. I appreciate it.
