How many of you are going to
finish off the Thanksgiving left
overs this weekend? Was your sister in law's squash casserole too soupy
again this year? Were you amazed at how much your grandson ate on
Thanksgiving? Eye witness accounts said he devoured 4 full plates full
of mashed potatos and
green bean casserole with those little fried onions on top and
he's not quite 2 years old. Did your lazy cousin show up? You know the
cousin that is so lazy he married a pregnant woman so he could have
kids. Did your great uncle on your mother's side of the family return
grace and said the blessing for a full 15 minutes? My grandmother's
sage cornbread dressing had the shelf life of plutonium and was used to
insulate the attic. NASA
wanted to use my grandmother's recipe for heat shields on Apollo space
capsules. Christmas
is just a few weeks away and
New Year's Eve is a
shade over a month away. I am looking forward to bringing the girls to
Tallapoosa for our first Possum Drop. I understand it draws people from
as far away as Buncombe, Steadman and East Muscadine. For a few
years I got to warm up the crowd and emcee the Peach Drop at
Underground Atlanta. The first time was New Year's Eve of 1985
and it was on a flat bed truck at
Woodruff Park in downtown Atlanta and it was not a big crowd. As
a matter of fact my high school graduation class was bigger. The class
of '69 at dear old Tally High had less than 50 graduates. The revelers
were winos or folks from out of town in
Atlanta for the
Peach Bowl when it
was held at
Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. It was a cold raw night with a
drizzle just a couple of degrees away from being sleet or snow. The
event finally got traction in the 1990's and is an event that now draws
a couple of hundred thousand. I also got to do the Peach Drop in
2007 emceeing and introducing music acts. The group Lady
Antebellum made their Atlanta debut and are now major players on
Music Row in Nashville. The trio is two guys from Augusta and the
daughter of
Linda Davis who has been a backup singer for
Reba McEntire for
decades. When do you being decorating for Christmas? When does the
tinsel and garland go on your tree? The last live Christmas
tree I ever had was from Haralson County and it was the last live
tree ever because it drank more than Hat Roberts, water that is. You got
to keep them from drying out. My next door neighbor in Marietta is from
St. Petersburg, Russia and only got to celebrate holidays when he and
his family came to America. He left his live tree up too long and his
house caught fire and burned it to the ground. That was the last year I
had a live tree. I wish there was a scent you could buy and spray that
smells like a real sure enought
North Carolina
fir. Another question about decorating is when do you risk life and limb
hanging icesicle lights on the outside of the house? Is is poor form to
put an inflatable Santa riding a Harley in the yard before the first
week of December? When is it proper to buy a Claxton Fruit Cake for a
door stop during the holidays? Who invented
egg nog and why?
