Is it just me or is love in the air this time of year, or it could be the paper mill up in Rome, I'm not sure. All I do know is that Valentine's Day is about a week away and the Hallmark Card, the Whitman's candy folks and Tommy Allen love this time of year. I learned a few years ago that Kroger stores sell the most roses in the United States during Valentine's Day. It is kind of interesting fact like Waffle House sells the most t-bone steaks in the nation. Valentine's Day as a child growing up in Tallapoosa had my mother going to the Empire 5 & 10 cent store and buying a box of small cards for every classmate. She did that until I was a senior at West Georgia College.  I know a guy who has sent someone probably 40 cards to his lady in the past year only to have cobwebs growing on his mail box. Some folks just don't like cards at all. Friends this isn't just Valentine's Day cards, Christmas cards, birthday cards, you name it. I hear some of my contemporaries whine that Valentine's Day was invented by Hallmark, florists, and Godiva Chocolates as a plot by the government to control us. It is rumored to have been created by Karl Marx or maybe it was Groucho, Chico, Zeppo, and Harpo Marx.  I haven't received a Valentine card since the Nixon administration. Guys, don't wait until the 13th to rush to CVS or the Piggly Wiggly to get Valentine's stuff. I wish you could buy Valentine's gift cards from Burger Chick. I'd give them. Is good form to give your loved one a pizza or a calzone from Papous? Have any of you fellows forgot the candy, card, and flowers and slept on the sofa until Memorial Day?  Since Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday maybe we can try to focus on the one that really and truly loves us. Just a thought. President's Day is coming up. We honor our nation's chief executives from George Washington to Barack Obama.  I think it was created so Jack Jackson can have a mattress sale at his store on the city's north side. I just read the nation's budget for 2011 and broke a hip carrying the report. I am trying to wrap my head around trillions of dollars in debt. The folks in Washington are saying the recession is over. I'd like to know where? I understand we had economic growth of over 5% the past quarter of 2009. It didn't reach my pockets, did it reach yours? I am looking forward to when our state and nation can get back on its feet and we can take care of things that need to be taken care of. Education should be the last place a budget is sliced. I see college students living hand to mouth and borrowing to the hilt and working hard to get an education. I have great admiration for students in our technical colleges and universities. The state should stop paying consultants obscene amounts of cash for limited information. There is where you can cut the budget. Cut out expensive retreats and let government folks that need overnight lodging go see Tom Bodett. Tom, don't leave the light on for them, it costs money. The Super Bowl is coming up Sunday in Miami. I'm rooting for the Colts. I loved the Baltimore Colts as a kid and I think Peyton Manning has allowed me to finally bury Johnny Unitas. Super Bowl parties will be going on around the world. I'm ready to sit back with my Golden Flakes and Coke Zero. Here's a helpful Super Bowl party household tip, leftover guacamole dip is good for shining green shoes with.
